This webinar aims to introduce to lawyers, in-house counsel and others the appeal of Japan as a place of arbitration for the resolution of international commercial disputes, including such involving non-Japanese corporations.

This webinar is intended for foreign companies and Japanese subsidiaries located or actively doing business in Singapore and other South-East Asian countries.

Speakers

Ms. Yoshimi Ohara
Partner at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu. Yoshimi Ohara served as counsel and arbitrator in international arbitration in various seats under the rules of major institutions and the UNITRAL. Yoshimi is currently serving as a Vice President of ICC International Court of Arbitration, a member of the ICCA Governing Board and a board member of ASA. She is a former Vice President of LCIA.

Mr. Hiroyuki Tezuka
Hiroyuki Tezuka heads the N&A’s international dispute resolution practice group. He serves as a court member of the ICC and SIAC, and as an executive director of the Japan Association of Arbitrators (JAA). He is a Fellow of CIArb and a Council member of the ICC Institute of World Business Law.

Mr. Matthew Gearing QC
Matthew Gearing QC is widely regarded as a leading arbitration practitioner; in particular he was appointed Queen’s Counsel (England & Wales) in February 2014. Matthew has acted in a large number of complex and high profile arbitrations around the world, both commercial arbitrations and investment treaty arbitrations. His experience includes arbitrations under the ICC, UNCITRAL, SIAC, HKIAC, KLRCA, SCC, LCIA and ICSID Rules.

Ms. Carita Wallgren-Lindholm
Carita Wallgren-Lindholm is an international arbitrator based in Helsinki, Finland. She is also the Chair of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, Paris. Carita sits in commercial and investment arbitrations. Institutions and rules include SCC, ICC, FAI, LCIA, JCAA, DIA, PCA, ICSID, UNCITRAL and NAFTA. Arbitral activities outside of Europe include institutions in Atlanta, Ga (USA) and the Caribbean.

Ms. Elaine Wong
Elaine Wong is a partner at Herbert Smith Freehills and has practised in Singapore, Tokyo and Paris. She is an English and Singapore qualified lawyer and represents clients in complex international arbitrations under all of the major arbitral rules, including the JCAA rules. She has particular expertise in the energy, infrastructure, technology and manufacturing industries. She also sits as arbitrator.

Prof. Masato Dogauchi 

Masato Dogauchi is a Professor of Law at Waseda University and a Professor Emeritus at University of Tokyo. He is at present the Chief Arbitration and Mediation Officer of Japan Commercial Arbitration Association (JCAA). He is also the President of Private International Law Association of Japan, and a senior counsel for T&K Partners (a Japan-based law firm).
